1829-1856: 50th Street and 5th Avenue

In 1856, on December 4th, the students from New York Institution
for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb moved to 99 Fort Wash-
ington Avenue in Washington Heights and named the school
"Fanwood" to honor a daughter and wooded estate of cousin of
former President James Monroe.
The Institute leased and purchased from the city, 11 acres of Virgin
Land on 50th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues. Erected the
1st permanent building and added two wings. It is currently Saks
Fifth Ave Department on 50th Street & 5th Avenue.
On July 14, 1858, the tower was destroyed by storm.
