1856-1938: 99 Fort Washington Avenue
in Washington Heights, NYC

Fanwood on Washington Heights, NYC

In year of 1856, on December 4th, New York Institution for the
Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb purchased the 37 1/2 acres
wooded estate on the bank of the Hudson River and was located
between 162nd and 165th Streets and eastward to St. Nicholas
Avenue, Washington Heights.

The pupils moved to 99 Fort Washington Avenue in Washington
Heights and was named after Fannie Monroe, a daughter of previous
President James Monroe. This is Fanwood's third estate in upper
Manhattan.  Fannie enjoyed walking through woods of the estate
and the name "Fanwood" was established.
